To Rachel, Joe & Dylan:
It is my belief that principled people from across the ideological spectrum can hammer out a consensus plan to bring fundamental structural reform to America’s healthcare system. Freed of the necessity to satisfy any constituency or special interest (or the desire to bring ruin upon the other party), one could formulate a plan that is guided by sound moral principles such as seeking the greatest good for the greatest number.
I hear all three of you on a fairly regular basis and hear much agreement —at least in terms of general principles— especially the need to bring true competition to bear in the marketplace. Does this require a government-established entity or is such an entity to be avoided at all costs? Can hybrids be devised that would be strong enough to provide an efficacious alternative to the current offerings but still be sufficiently free of the features that critics conclude are tantamount to a government takeover?
I challenge the three of you to get together and produce a detailed plan that is free of parochial concerns and sops to special interests. Presumably this consensus plan would not be identical to one that any one of you would devise it s/he were the sole decider but *would* be much better than either the status quo or any of the piles of sausage that are before us now.
It is time for statesmanly governance. Rachel Maddow, Joe Scarborough, and Dylan Ratigan can show us how to do it.
Sincerely,
Jay Branscomb
